THE MOORS

At one time all Africans were referred to as moors. The word moor was interchangeable with words black and negro as in Shakespeare's writings; Titus Andronicus, Othello and The Merchant Of Venice.

The word moor also referred to the northern African who for the most part became Muslim in the 600s and invaded Spain in the 700s-711 AD. At this time north Africa had retain the ancient advances in culture while Europe had fallen into its dark age.

As the Moors spread Islam across North Africa and into Southern Europe, they also spread high culture; state of the art mathematics, science, astronomy and art.
They controlled Spain for 800 years. The last Moorish stronghold was taken in 1492 (When Columbus sailed the ocean blue).
